Stardaeja Hamilton
aka
Star the Poet
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Stardeja Hamilton and I am the 22 year old author of “The Hard Stage Of A Smart Teen” and “Speak Up”. I was born and raised in downtown Charleston. I graduated from Burke High School in 2019 and while at Burke my first book was published while I was a junior. I love to write poetry it is really my passion.
Describe your book "Speak Up" in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.
I would describe “Speak Up” as an inspirational and motivational book. To really help people out or dark places and to know they are not alone.
Is there anything you would like people to take away from your book?
Yes, I would love for people to take away being stronger than your thoughts. To know that everybody goes through something but it’s all up to you to get out out of it. I just want everyone to know they are not alone.
What type of questions did you ask yourself while writing this book?
The type of questions I asked myself while writing this book was “where am I going at with this ?” and also “what would my title be?“
What is your favorite line from your book?
My favorite line is “ I feel a deep connection with the green butterfly. It speaks so high of me.” This is my favorite line because my little cousin Davieona passed away in a car accident and I truly believe she is a green butterfly that always passes me when I am feeling down. She lets me know everything is okay. I miss her.
How do you use social media as an author?
I use Facebook to promote my books. I post poems sometimes and I also would have days where I feel like having a sale on my books.
Does writing energize or exhaust you? Or both?
Writing doesn’t energize or exhaust me. My writing actually makes me feel much relaxed and relieved. I feel that way because once I get into they mode to write my focus cannot be distracted. Once I know I wrote an amazing poem I just feel so good after.
What books do you enjoy reading?
Books that I enjoy reading are like teenage books I really love this book called “Clarity and connection” by Yung Pableo. That book made me dig more into my mind and really teaches me how the mind works.
If you could be mentored by a famous author, who would it be?
I wouldn’t choose an author I would choose my favorite inspirational singer which is Chris Brown. I would choose him because he takes his music very serious and he is also very creative and I know he can put my mind in a place I never knew I could be at and make me so much creative with my writing.
What would you like to say to your readers?
I would like to tell my readers that I appreciate their support and I really want them to keep going and to never give up. The sky is the limit and that they can do whatever they put they mind to always. I also want them to know that a kids book is coming up next. We are taking a break from poetry for a while.
