Get To Know Author Chyrel J. Jackson
What inspired you to write this book, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?
God, life, loss, grief and depression were all reasons for my writing this book. Life happens; sorrow will come but we choose whether to wallow or dance. Music, and writing heal people. For a time I couldn't hear music.
Can you tell us about your main character (or favorite character) and what makes them special to you?
Poetry books are a little different in that they have many main characters. I could say all the poems with messaging specifically speaking to women. I am a woman and I always seek words or messages of affirmation.
What was the most rewarding—and the most challenging—part of writing this book?
Giving God back the talent that he lent me for a while. This is his book. I'm so humbled to have the ability to be a giver. Greatest challenge- Overcoming me.
If readers could remember just one thing after finishing your book, what would you want it to be?
The content was so relatable and I could see myself in it.
What's next for you? Are you currently working on another book or exciting project that readers can look forward to?
I'd love to complete my chapbook through the Garden of Neuro's publishing source. And begin working with my sister again on our project; SistersRoc'N'Rhyme Presents Holding Back Years.

Book Spotlight:

Unsung Canaan Ballads is a poetry collection by Chyrel J. Jackson of culture, honesty, family, history, emotion, resilience, and literary excellence. It's a love letter to Black people living in an imperfect and whitewashed world. This compilation celebrates the poetically lyrical sisterhood, Black poets, and Black writers. There is something for the grieving soul. Words of encouragement for the sad or hurting soul. Healing for the lost and seeking soul. During loss sometimes we fight to hold on to ourselves. This compilation of poems is healing for the brokenhearted. It reminds us that healing takes time. No one can orchestrate life events. Eventually wholeness and happiness is found through simple things. Music, art, books, nature, poetry, and family. It's time to grab your favorite beverage and nestle into what feels like a little bit of home, Unsung Canaan Ballads.
WOW! SistersRocNRhyme's Unsung Canaan Ballads is a revelation! It's a definitive blueprint of masterful storytelling about Black culture. In the gallery of poetic passages, I found myself immersed in a maze of wonderment reminiscent of a mahogany museum. Hypothetically, if such a museum exists, this book would represent the map of hidden treasures. Author Chyrel Jackson proves once again why she is a premier modern-day poet and this book, along with her previous acclaimed works with her sister Lyris, will undoubtedly be included as a collector series for serious poet enthusiasts. This is an exceptional piece of work!
As a Southerner who was raised in the Midwest, I felt the down-home charm with many pieces like N'awlins Jazz Piping, Evolution of the Blues, Leave me Alone with my Blues, and Harold's Chicken with a side of Black Culture, just to name a small few are downright jaw dropping and thought-provoking. Then, there are spiritual passages like Walking as Servants and A Joyful People will put an eternal stamp on your soul, but Suffering in Silence made me tear up because it made me reflect on past traumas that were still unresolved. There's a stroke of genius in every single poetic expression; I'm just pointing out some select ones, but the entire book is a masterwork that left a profound impression on me.
With Unsung Canaan Ballads, I can safely acknowledge that Chyrel Jackson is todays Maya Angelou, and if Miss Angelou were still present today, she would proudly place Chyrel Jackson in that Mt. Rushmore of elite Black Women poets. As a fellow author, I'm simply amazed and inspired by SistersRocNRhyme's contributions as artists and fundamental insight into the plight of the Black community.
Give 'em hell, sister Chyrel, give 'em hell. You inspire us all!
