July Inkspiration Day 23- Melaine B

Melanie B

Author Melanie B. was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. From a young age, she found comfort and escape in the pages of fiction, with Urban Fiction becoming both her sanctuary and inspiration. Reading offered peace during life’s challenges, while personal struggles fueled her passion for storytelling. Pain birthed her pen, but the hustle gave it purpose.

Get To Know Author Melanie B.:

What inspired you to write this book, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?
Every book starts with a spark—sometimes it’s a specific image that won’t leave your head, and other times it’s an emotion so heavy you have to put it somewhere just to process it. For me, writing has always been deeply therapeutic, a vital way to navigate my own journey of healing. When life gets incredibly tough and you find yourself facing profound personal loss, the pen becomes both a shield and a release.
If there is one major takeaway I hope readers keep close to their hearts long after they close the book, is that our current chapter is not your final destination, and there is immense power in your survival. I want readers to see that vulnerability isn't a weakness, it's the very thing that allows us to heal and rebuild. No matter how dark or messy the journey gets, you can fight your way through the pain, claim your power, and write a completely new ending for yourself.

Can you tell us about your main character (or favorite character) and what makes them special to you?
Honestly, if I’m being completely real, I could never pick just one. All of my characters are my favorite. There is a piece of me in each and every one of them. When you write from a place of healing, your characters naturally become the keepers of your own emotions. One character might get my fierce, protective streak; another might carry the heavy, silent weight of my grief; and a third might get my stubborn determination to survive and thrive no matter what. Even the flawed, chaotic, and downright unhinged choices they make come from a deeply human place that I understand.
They are special to me because they are a mosaic of my own journey. Putting a piece of myself into them—their pain, their passion, their street smarts, and their capacity to love fiercely—is what makes them breathe on the page. They are all my favorites because, together, they show that you can go through the absolute fire and still come out whole on the other side.

What was the most rewarding—and the most challenging—part of writing this book?
The most challenging part of writing this book was stepping directly into the fire of my own grief to bring Milan’s story to life. When you are hurting, the easiest thing to do is shut down or hide it away. Forcing myself to sit at the keyboard and dig into Milan’s rawest, most vulnerable moments meant confronting my own heavy loss every single day. There were times when saying "I’m not okay" through her felt almost too close to home, and finding the strength to give her hope when my own world felt dark took everything I had in me.
But that exact challenge is what made it the most rewarding experience of my career.
Writing Milan became my own therapy. It taught me that it’s okay to grieve out loud, to scream, and to admit when the weight is too heavy to carry alone. The ultimate reward was discovering that moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting the love of my life. That love doesn’t vanish; it stays woven into who I am. Crafting her journey showed me that a happy ending is still possible, and that moving on isn't about letting go of the past—it's about holding onto that beautiful love while still allowing yourself to live, breathe, and find joy again.

If readers could remember just one thing after finishing your book, what would you want it to be?
Moving on is not the same thing as forgetting.
Although I still struggle with losing my husband, I have learned that honoring his memory doesn't mean I have to stay trapped in the dark. Writing Milan’s story taught me that my heart is big enough to hold both the profound love I will always have for him and the space to breathe, heal, and find joy again.

What's next for you? Are you currently working on another book or exciting project that readers can look forward to?
Right now, I’m pulling double duty. I am currently working on my second book since I transitioned from being a signed author, to going indie, but I also have a major release dropping on July 26th. This project is an event exclusive for Pages In The City, which is being held in my hometown of New York.
