Author Profile: Chicki Brown and Book Giveaway

Chicki Brown

Tell us about yourself.
I am a contemporary women’s fiction/romance author who has been featured twice in USA Today. B.R.A.B. (Building Relationships Around Books) has awarded me honors for my work, as well as SORMAG (Shades of Romance Magazine).
Before becoming a full-time author, I worked as a secretary, typesetter, daycare provider, and executive assistant. My goal as an author is to entertain readers and provide an escape from their daily routine into the lives of her characters.
A Jersey girl who relocated to Atlanta, GA in 1994, I now consider myself a Georgia peach.

Tell us about your featured book.
HAVE YOU SEEN HER? is the first novel I published and is still my favorite. The book began in my mind after seeing a news story about an average middle-class woman who escaped from her abusive husband. I started thinking about what a wealthy woman in a similar situation would do. Although financially she might be able to temporarily disappear, her husband has more money and access to connections she doesn’t have.
During that time, I was fangirl crushing on a Hollywood actor who will remain nameless.  He became my character role model for the hero, Taylor Villanova.

How do you do research for your books?
Research is one of my favorite parts of writing. With the availability of search engines like Google, it’s possible to find out just about anything. I love doing in-depth research on the setting for my books, the professions of my characters, and other details. In the past, I have even visited the town I chose to use for one of my stories. My late husband and I stayed there for the weekend so I could interview and mingle with residents. It was so much fun.

On a typical day, how much time do you spend writing?
When I was writing daily, I usually went to a local coffeehouse three days a week and wrote for 3-4 hours. On alternate days, I’d stay at home in my office and would work from 10 AM to 4 PM. Of course, that includes research, finding pictures of characters and setting, and working on promotion/marketing material.

How do you handle writer’s block?
In my own writing career, I’ve discovered that writer’s block is the result of some other issue. With me it is fatigue, lack of research or lack of planning on the story. When I correct the problem, the block disappears.

What time of the day do you usually write?
Morning is my best time of day. I am more alert and have more energy. It’s also beneficial for me to start working before I get distracted by other things like housework, errands, or television.

Do you feel an author should also be a reader?
There is no way around it. If you don’t read, you shouldn’t write. Period. Reading the work of other authors teaches you what works and what doesn’t.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
It is way more work than I ever expected. The writing is the fun part. There is so much more to publishing a book. Creating promotion/marketing material and finding reputable, effective places to promote takes a great deal of time and investigation. An author must also spend time chatting with readers and networking with other authors, whether in person or online.

What does literary success look like to you?
Whatever you want for your own career. It can be anything from building a devoted following of readers or making a certain number of sales. That differs for each author. For me, it’s been discovering how much readers enjoy my work. Having them contact me to ask about the books and when the next one is coming brings joy to my heart.

What would you like to say to your readers?
I am so thankful for their support and for trusting me to take them on journeys with the characters who live in my imagination. Taking a year off can hinder an author’s career.
As my hiatus ends this month, I hope they decide to stick with me.

Starting very slow in the beginning but leading to a much thrown together ending. From the readers standpoint seems the author was going one way with this story then decided to go another angle. Some parts of the book gets you hooked to the action that is going on but the next thing that happens in the story places you into left field and leaves the reader wondering where did that come from. I wish the author would have given more interaction with the main plot of the character. I say it is a good read, but if the author had taken out some parts of the books that seem to be just “fluff”, it would have been a great read.

Author Profile: Robert R. Davis and Book Giveaway

Robert R. Davis

Tell us about yourself.
I am a Christian author, teacher and minister and a native of Connecticut.  I was always active in the church even as a youth.  I served as an usher, choir member and junior deacon.  As an adult I became a deacon at the ripe old age of 20 and a Sunday school teacher to adults and teens.  In 2007, I accepted the office of minister and in time became an assistant Pastor.
I have always had a deep desire to understand the mysteries of life.  I often questioned the reasons behind the things of life.  This trait did not always go over well in my youth, but as an adult it increased my understanding greatly, especially in the realm of studying the bible.
I have a deep passion to understanding the meaning behind the commands and precepts of the bible.  My search for truth continues to shape my life, as I pursue God.  My writings are a vehicle to communicate the truth to the body of Christ.

Tell us about your featured book.
In the Beginning (the Truth Behind Genesis) is a riveting, thought provoking look at creation from a biblical perspective. This book breaks down the symbolism of Genesis in order to ascertain the real spiritual message from God. It brings so much clarity to the scriptures you will wonder why you never saw these things before. It is simply indispensable to anyone serious about the truth.
Recently, women have come under renewed attacks against being in leadership in the Church.  The reason for this prohibition against women pastoring is found in the letters of the apostle Paul.  However, all of the support Paul uses in found in Genesis chapters 2 and 3.   A misunderstanding of Adam and Eve has caused much damage and hardship to women for centuries.  When looking at what women are allowed to do in the church, it is as if Genesis 5:2 does not exist.  Every woman should read, In the Beginning and find out the truth, today.  In addition, share it with your ministry.  This work will revolutionize how women are treated in the church, forever.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I wrote my first book in 2002 called The Final Message: Understanding the Book of Revelation.  It was challenging enough to write my first book, but to tackle a subject as difficult of Revelation was intimidating, to say the least.  This work grew out of my desire to understand this last and enigmatic book of the Bible. However, I don’t think I consider myself a writer until I had written several books.  It just didn’t seem real to me.

How do you do research for your books?
I start with a topic or particular passages of the Bible.  Then I check to see what is already written on the subject.  If the subject has been well covered and understood, then I will not write about it.  Otherwise, I will find all of the available scriptures on the subject and begin to study it for myself.  Once, I am convinced there is enough material to write about, I begin writing.

What would you consider the tools of the trade?
I consider a computer and an electronic Bible to be indispensable tools of the trade for me.  Other, than that it would be research materials, lots of research material.  You need to become an expert in whatever you are writing about.

Is writing your full-time career? Or would you like it to be?
No, unfortunately writing is not my full-time career.  I am a software developer by trade and have been for over 40 years.  I thought when I penned my first work, back in 2002, that I would be a full-time writer.  This dream still has not come to fruition.  It can be frustrating at times, when you know you have information that the public wants or needs.  However, getting the word out to the masses is a real challenge, but I keep writing because it is my passion.

What is your work schedule like when you are writing?
When I am writing, I get immersed in the project and lose track of time.  I generally write in the evening hours and go for as long as I can.  I love studying and researching the bible, so I don’t mind spending long hours doing it.

What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)?
I am an introvert by nature and I don’t always have a lot to say.  So, I am surprised when I can get a book’s worth of information from a particular subject.  Another, surprising thing I see is when I proofread the work and reads like I didn’t write it.  That is when I know I am finished, when it feels like some else wrote the words.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I am a movie buff.  I love a good comedy, action or sci-fi movie.  I am also fascinated about anything (books) on how the brain works, called neuroplasticity

What would you like to say to your readers?
If you get a copy of my book and enjoy it, please tell someone about it.  I depend on word of mouth, to build an audience.  Please give me your feedback.  I would love to hear from you and lastly, thank you for your support.

Tell us about yourself.

I am a 41-year-old new author from Brooklyn, NY. I am also a mother of two young men. I'm a Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Survivor and I am currently a Breast Cancer fighter. I have many hats that I wear.

Tell us about your featured book.

My book is called Natalia's Words of Wisdom, Finding my Way, Volume 1 is my first self-published book. It took me 12 years to finally bring it together. It is a collection of creative writing pieces that deal with various things that we deal with in life.

How do you do research for your books?

This actually started as a blog. I experienced the death of my fiancé in 2011 and that was how this came to life. Whenever I felt like I needed to release any stress or anxiety that I was experiencing, I just started to write.

How do you balance making demands on the reader with taking care of the reader?

I think about what if I were in the reader's shoes. I start to think about whether that person may also feel what I am feeling but probably don't know how to express their thoughts. Or the reader might feel that they are the only ones dealing with a certain situation. What I do is I start by asking a question then I draw them in with the words that I use to make them realize that I have been where they are and I understand.

How long does it take you to write a book?

So far with this first book, it took me 12 years. I have started my second book, but that may also take a little longer because it is about my journey as a cancer survivor.

How do books get published?

For me, because I am self-published, it took me a while to decide on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing. I had to thoroughly research which was the best route for me. I felt that was self-publishing. Would I do traditional publishing in the future? I am sure that I will eventually

Do you feel an author should also be a reader?

I absolutely feel that an author should be a reader. That is the first step.

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

My mentor Rolanda Pyle has been an author for as long as I can remember and was the person to realize that I had this gift in me.

What does literary success look like to you?

For me literary success looks like reaching the world with my stories. Especially single mothers who have the aspiration to write but aren't sure how to go about it. I want to assist with helping them find their voice and using it.

What would you like to say to your readers?

Thank you for your support. Live out your dreams and be unapologetically you!

Author Profile & Giveaway: Kris LaShay

Kris LaShay

Tell us about yourself.
I am a 39 year old mother of three. I am a full-time personal banker and an author. I have loved to create stories for as long as I can remember. I was a reader first and my love for writing stemmed from my love of books. I became a published author in 2020 and currently have 8 books under my belt. As a woman from a small little town in Virginia I am extremely proud to be able to say I am a published author. In the little bit of spare time I do have I love to read, shop, and spend time with my family.

Tell us about your featured book.
Secrets We Keep is my most recent release under AJ Presents. It’s one of my favorite books to date. The main male character, King, is first introduced in my Christmas book, ‘Tis The Season For a Boss but you don’t have to read the books in order. King and Kinleigh stole my heart from the time I started writing them and still have it. King Joseph comes from a wealthy family while Kinleigh comes from the other side of the tracks. One eventful night leads to life altering changes and secrets are exposed!!!

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes I have. I’ve been writing for a very long time and it was a dream of mine to one day be a published author and here we are.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
Most of the time the plot comes first.

Tell us about your first published book. What was the journey like?
My first published book is Notorious. It actually came about from a story I created one night when I was working as a correctional officer. I hand wrote the story while working on nightshift in segregation. It wasn’t even my initial submission to the publishing company I first signed to. I ended up with writers block with my submission story so I went back to that particular story. It didn’t have a title or anything. I went back to it, updated it to fit the time and Notorious was produced. I was scared as I don’t know what when my publisher gave me my release date. It was an amazing journey, but it’s so hard to turn something you hold dear to you over for the world to see.

What book is currently on your bedside table?
I don’t have any books by my bedside table. I read from the Kindle App and. There are so many books in the queue I don’t know where to start.

Do you believe that an author should be a reader? Please explain your reasoning
I don’t see anything wrong with it if you have a balance. Reading has always been an escape for me but I won’t read if I am deep into writing a book. I don’t want to get so wrapped in reading that I put my own work to the side.

Favorite book/story you have read as an adult?
My all-time favorite book is Little Ghetto Girl by Danielle Santiago and Demon’s Dream by Elle Kayson is my most recent favorite.

What was your dream job when you were younger?
I always thought I would become a pediatrician when I was a kid.

What would you like to say to your readers?
Thank you so much for all of your support. It means so much to have people believe in you and what you do. To know that I have taken a hiatus due to life and people still read my work, share my work, look forward to my work, etc. means everything to me.

The two are authors of several books, one being From Brokenness To Wholeness, by which they have organized a ministry with the same name.

Tell us about your featured book.

My featured book is Ladies With Purpose. This book has some extraordinary women telling their stories. After reading you will feel encouraged, you will feel blessed, and know that God is always with you and will get you through any situation no matter what the circumstance. The women in this book are courageous and we are more than conquerors and women of strength. These women show and tell us how to get over challenges and defeat any giants that try to stop you from being where God wants you to be.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
As a used in junior high school, I always wrote, because that was a comfort place for me.   As I got older, I thought some of my righties were corny and just placed them in a folder. I never thought of myself as an author, even though in 2012, I went to a church and a profit called before, and told me that there were multiple books in my hand and multiple platforms, including a radio show and provision will be provided for me.
After I met my husband and we talked about writing a book together and this is how it all started and doors have opened for me, and so now I have accepted the clarion call to be an author.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
Oh my books are non-fictional and the characters are true so I believe the characters would come forth because it is due their life struggles life, challenges, and life successes that the plot of purpose and destiny comes forth.

Tell us about your first published book?
My first published book was from “Brokenness to wholeness: God will turn your broken pieces into his masterpiece.”
Being a FaceTime author, this is not only challenging but scary. I excepted the first publishing company that returned my call which was the first mistake. It’s always good to get multiple calls with publishing companies in to see what all they have to offer.
However, I did not know that at that time we were out of thousands of dollars and when we receive the finished product it was not grammatically correct nor did they do editing in which we paid for and not only do that every year in till this day which is 2023 they are requesting additional funds. Needless to say I do not use that company anymore and have not used them since 2015.
This was a hard course for us to take we were confused we were exhausted we felt really bad. This was a journey that I guess we had to take an order to learn from our mistakes, but we also want to tell other future authors to also learn from our mistakes, do you research investigate the publishing company that you wish to work on your projects make sure they have your best interest at heart and not just their wallets.

What book is currently on your bedside table?
Currently, I am reading a book called the Bait of Satan.

Do you believe that an author should be a reader?
Yes definitely. You can’t be a good ride with that being an active reader. You can’t be a good writer without being a devoted reader, I am active reader it actually kinda go hand-in-hand. You can glean experience, expertise, encouragement, and empowerment from being a leader, and this will blow over into your ability to write. If you’re not interested in reading how are you be interested in writing because she must read what you write.

Favorite book/story you have read as an adult.
From This Day Forward by Gaty Groeschel

What was your dream job when you were younger?
My dream job was to be a criminal psychologist because I wanted to help the bad guy to understand what he did was bad.(my literal thought as a child/youth)

What would you like to say to your readers?
Always know that there is strength in the struggle and that you can overcome anything and everything that you put your mind to including when they are brain freezes and you cannot seem to process the situation at you and you can make it you can do anything you set your mind to do

Mo Flames

Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Hopkins, SC. When I graduated from high school, I moved to Georgia for about a year before relocating to New Jersey where I lived for 20 years until 2016. I returned to Georgia where I currently reside in the suburbs with my husband and daughter. By day, I’m a Regulatory Affairs consultant in the pharmaceutical industry. Whenever I’m not writing, I’m enjoying the free time with family and friends, traveling, in other authors’ worlds, or playing The Sims.

Tell us about your featured book.

One Is Enough is the highly anticipated, book three and final installment to the scandalous Enough Series. It's a steamy contemporary romantic suspense that, like the books preceding it, One Is Enough will keep readers on the edge of their seats. After surviving a near-fatal accident, we learn what happens to our main character, Desiree Edwards, and her new lover, Derrik Carter as well as who the father of her baby is.

When did you start writing?

Since I could hold a pencil and my dad had me practicing on that beige, kindergarten-lined writing paper. I’ve always enjoyed telling stories and English was my favorite subject. However, I didn’t get serious about writing until I published my first blog on MySpace in 2006.

What comes first, the plot or characters?

For me, the characters come first. Once I know who will be in the story, the plot starts to develop.

What advice would you give a new writer, someone just starting out?

Find a community of like-minded writers that will support your writing goals. Sprint daily - use a method that works best, but I would suggest the Pomodoro Technique. Get with a mentor. Give yourself lots of grace and room to fail, but never give up if this is your passion.

What is the most difficult part about writing for you?

Finding all the right words to express what I’m trying to say. Sometimes it comes right out and other days I can get stuck on description. A thesaurus doesn’t always help either.

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

No, not really. I’ve practiced techniques to keep my creative juices flowing.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

No, I don’t want them to stand on their own. That’s a lonely feeling. Each of my books will have connections. Since all the scandal and drama began with the Enough Series in Atlanta, my goal is to interconnect the families and friends. For every character I create, there will be a direct tie to someone from that cast. Hey, I’m building a world within a world.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

The phoenix – it symbolizes hope, courage, resurrection, renewal, and immortality.

What would you like to say to your readers?

I love y’all like I love tacos and if you know me, I freaking love them! Thank you for rocking with me this long. I appreciate all the support you’ve shown me since I got back to what I love doing the most – writing and entertaining y’all. If you just got here, stick around. I’m just getting started. There’s a whole lot more to come…literally!

Author Profile: Theresa Reese/ Book Giveaway

Theresa Reese

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Theresa Reese, I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. I write part time while working and raising a daughter. My love for writing started as an outlet and therapy. I released a self published poetry book back in 2015 and continued to write contemporary romance until I was signed in 2019 to Cole Hart publications. My second series landed me on the best selling charts on amazon and from there my career took over. I have written multiple box sets with Tasha Mack also signed to Cole Hart and one with Mz.Biggs.

Tell us about your featured book.

My featured book is a self published novella titled; Unspeakable Desires. It’s a different style of writing because I wanted to solely focus on the romance side of a relationship. I aimed to pull that out of me since I always write an out toxic relationships with a bunch of drama.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?

My publisher decides on the titles.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Since I was a young child I enjoyed writing but I took it serious in 2015.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

I learned when I was about twelve I wrote an essay about The Bronx and won a boat ride.

How do books get published?

My books get published on Amazon through my publisher.

What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

1 Glass of wine, 2 shots of Patron

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I would have to say my ability to spin plots so the book is always unpredictable.

What’s the best way to market your books?

The best way thus far would have to be on Facebook. I use reels, have a private book group and a few sponsored ads.

What would you like to say to your readers?

I would like to give thanks and appreciation to my readers who are old and new. Without them I probably wouldn’t have continued to drop books back to back like I have. Even during my slow writing moments, I can always count on a reader to inbox me and say how they loved my books or when the next one was coming.

Based in Seattle, Washington, rain was always in the forecast. As a northwestern storm headed their way, Asani and Gabriel were forced to be in each other's presence longer than anticipated. How could two strangers, one night, and a car, lead to a story of triumph and romance.
Asani Richards was your uptight, goody two shoes with her life mapped out from the day she was born. While nothing could prepare her for Gabriel Hunt, he was the total opposite of what she wanted and looked for in a guy. Headstrong and from the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, "Gabe" didn't live by the books or follow any rules. Still, as the saying goes, opposites attract.
Was it fate or mere coincidence?
In this novella, Theresa Reese pens an emotionally complex story about love, trust, and survival.
