When I review books of poetry, I always choose two poems that truly spark my interest and leave a lasting impression on me. The first poem is Summer Sun. This poem beautifully reflects the feeling of welcoming the beginning of summer. I think many of us can relate to being tired of the cold winter months and longing to feel the warm summer air against our faces again. What also stood out to me was the artwork connected to this piece. It is something you could easily imagine hanging on the wall of a young child’s room. The smile on the young lady’s face captures such warmth and joy, almost as if she and the sun are one.
My second favorite poem is Burnout. This poem really hit home for me because it describes a feeling I have experienced many times in life. Honestly, I believe everyone has found themselves in that situation at some point. The artwork paired with this piece captured the emotion perfectly. The crinkled paper, the smudges around her head, and the tears in her eyes all brought the poem to life. It was powerful because it showed the emotional exhaustion that so many people quietly carry. I know that feeling all too well.
Readers should definitely grab a copy of this book because there is a strong chance they will find themselves reflected in at least one of these poems. The emotions, thoughts, and experiences shared throughout the collection feel real and relatable. Another thing that makes this book stand out is the artwork. After reading each poem, the images give readers something meaningful to sit back and reflect on. It was a wonderful creative decision by the author to include artwork alongside the poetry because the visuals add even more emotion and depth to the reading experience.
