July Inkspiration Day 9- Melissa Felix

Author Melissa Felix

Melissa Felix is the author of Silence Speaks, a poet, former educator, and speaker from Arlington, Texas. She taught elementary students for more than a decade before pursuing a new chapter in her career. Melissa holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Texas at Arlington and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of North Texas.

After being diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure, Melissa turned to writing as a way to process grief, rediscover hope, and heal. What began as a deeply personal outlet evolved into a mission to advocate for women experiencing infertility. Through podcast interviews, speaking engagements, community conversations, and her debut poetry collection, Silence Speaks, she creates space for women to feel seen, heard, and understood while reminding them they are not alone.

Melissa is passionate about the power of storytelling to transform pain into purpose. Whether through poetry, speaking engagements, or authentic conversations, she hopes to inspire others to embrace their voice and find healing in sharing their own stories.

When she's not writing, Melissa enjoys performing spoken-word poetry at open mics, exploring museums and cultural experiences, discovering live music, traveling, spending time with her mini Goldendoodle, Simba, and serving her community as a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc

Get To Know Author Melissa Felix

What inspired you to write this book, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?
Silence Speaks was born from one of the most painful seasons of my life: being diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure, which is a type of infertility. I didn't start writing because I wanted to become an author. I started writing because I was trying to survive emotionally. I was carrying so much grief, confusion, and loneliness, and writing became the one place where I could be completely honest about what I was feeling. With each poem written it became another step in my healing journey.
For years, I carried my story in silence. Then I discovered something life-changing: my healing began the moment my silence found its voice.
As I began sharing pieces of my story, I realized there were so many women quietly carrying similar pain. That is what inspired me to turn my private journal into a public conversation. I wanted to create something that would let women know they are seen, understood, and never alone in their journey, even when it feels that way.
My hope is that readers walk away knowing they are not alone. Whether they're navigating infertility, loss, disappointment, or another unexpected life journey, I want them to know that their story matters, their feelings are valid, and healing is possible.
My story began in silence, but my healing began when that silence finally spoke. Today, Silence Speaks is my invitation to every woman who has ever suffered quietly:
Your story matters.
Your voice matters.
It's time for our stories to be heard.
It's time for our voices to be heard.
It's time for us to be heard.

Can you tell us about your main character (or favorite character) and what makes them special to you?
Because Silence Speaks is a poetry collection, it doesn't have traditional characters. In many ways, I am the voice woven throughout every page. The poems offer glimpses into my personal journey through some of life's most unexpected chapters.

At its heart, Silence Speaks is an invitation for women to see themselves in these pages. While the collection was inspired by my journey with Premature Ovarian Failure and infertility, my hope is that women from all walks of life will find a piece of themselves within its pages. The poems journey through the many seasons of womanhood, reflecting the emotions and experiences that shape us while reminding readers they are never alone in what they carry.

Every poem holds a piece of me. Some were written from places of deep pain and unanswered questions. Others were born from moments of growth, gratitude, healing, and empowerment. My hope is that every reader walks away knowing she is more than a diagnosis, heartbreak, or the unexpected chapters of her story.

The poems that are most special to me are the ones that remind women they don't have to suffer in silence. Those pieces reflect the heart behind Silence Speaks: transforming pain into purpose, creating connection, and helping someone else feel seen. If even one woman finishes this book feeling less alone than she did before opening it, then every vulnerable word was worth writing.

What was the most rewarding—and the most challenging—part of writing this book?
The most rewarding part was realizing that my pain could become someone else's healing. Every time someone tells me they felt understood after reading my words, I'm reminded that sharing my story was worth it. Knowing that my experiences have encouraged someone else to keep going is one of the greatest gifts this journey has given me.

The most challenging part was allowing myself to be vulnerable. It's one thing to write honestly in a journal. It's another to publish your deepest thoughts for the world to read. There were moments when I questioned whether I should keep these poems private. But I realized that
healing often begins with honesty, and honesty requires courage. Looking back now, I'm grateful I chose courage over comfort.

If readers could remember just one thing after finishing your book, what would you want it to be?
I want readers to remember that healing begins the moment we give ourselves permission to be honest about our pain. So often we carry burdens in silence because we think no one will understand or because we're afraid of being judged. But silence was never meant to become our permanent home.

I hope readers close the book believing this:

    Your story matters.
    Your voice matters.
No matter what you've been through, you deserve to be heard.

There is freedom in giving a voice to what we've carried in silence. Sometimes the very story we were afraid to tell becomes the hope someone else was praying to find.

Healing doesn't always begin when the pain ends. Sometimes it begins the moment Silence Speaks.

What's next for you? Are you currently working on another book or exciting project that readers can look forward to?

Silence Speaks is just the beginning. My vision has always been bigger than publishing a book. Through speaking engagements, writing workshops, and spaces where women can write, reflect, and heal together, I hope to create safe spaces where people can use storytelling and writing as tools for healing, reflection, and personal growth.

I'm also excited about future writing projects that continue exploring healing, resilience, faith, and purpose. Whether through books, poetry, workshops, or conversations, my mission remains the same: to help others discover the strength that can be found in sharing their stories.

I believe every person has a story worth telling.   My hope is that everything I create reminds people that the very thing they've been tempted to hide may become the very thing that helps someone else find hope and healing. Silence Speaks is only the first chapter of that mission, and I'm excited for what's still to come.
