Meet Author Iesha Bree

Tell us about yourself.
If you haven't read a novel by Iesha Bree, you can expect to read about bold independent women and Smooth, Charming Men ready to mend broken hearts. Each novel penned to heal and show each woman they're worthy of love.
I am currently a self published author, Cover Designer, and reader. I have been reading all types of books by many different authors for years and I just love the idea of love so I decided I should share what I dream and hope to have someday! I'm also a military brat, so I always have this itch to travel to a new place that's another one of my passions.

Tell us about your latest book.
My latest book was Heated which is the final book in the Newton Family Series! This book really tested me as an author because I had to take a character who looked unredeemable and make him a book bae! Let’s just say I had my work cut out for me after all the mess he pulled in Strummed, but by the end of the book I was extremely pleased with his character, and he became one of my favorites. This book shows growth in current relationships and budding relationships!

Are there therapeutic benefits to modeling a character after someone you know?
I think it helps to make the characters have more depth because you’ve spend a lot of time with the person. One of the books I wrote, Unlove Me, I wrote that after my first heartbreak and I poured everything into it. So I guess it did help release any sadness since I posed the terrible ex as my actual ex at the time.

What part of the book did you have the hardest time writing?
In Heated, I honestly enjoyed every part of that book. But, spoiler alert if you haven’t read Heated it’s a part in the book that covers Postpartum depression. I found that to be a little difficult because I’ve never had children but I’ve been around people who have experienced it. But, ultimately I had mothers reach out to me and said they loved that touch so I couldn’t have done too bad.

What are common traps for new authors?
I think comparison is the biggest trap, hopefully I am answering this correctly! Never compare yourself to anyone else because those are the things that cause writers block and self doubt.

At what time of the day do you do most of your writing?
Since I am a graphic designer as well as an author, I don’t have a specific time I write. I just try to squeeze it in where I can. But if I am free from my projects, I love an early morning session when everyone else is asleep.

What’s your writing software of choice?
I am a big Dabble girl! I absolutely love it. You can have multiple windows open at one time so I truly appreciate that.

What book (or books) are you currently reading?
It’s hard for me to read while writing but when Shvonne Latrice and a few others drop books I make time so I am reading her most recent book The Marriage Favor.

If you could be mentored by a famous author, who would it be?
I would definitely choose Brenda Jackson, her longevity is something to aspire for, Not to mention her books are just so good.

What would you like to say to your readers?
I just want to thank them for being patient and showing me continuously why I write! Also, the next release is going to be something special!

  Meet Author Denise Coleman

Tell us about yourself.
Hello! I've been writing for about fifteen years now. I released my first book in 2010. I've been an avid reader for most of my life. Therefore, writing seemed to be a natural progression for me. being a published author quickly and easily became my biggest dream. I must say, that being a mom, I also felt it was important to show my children actual proof that they could make their dreams come true. If I didn't take action to make my own dreams come true, how could I expect them to try? I guess the core of me is a dreamer, and I don't intend to change.

Tell us about your latest book.
My latest book is Behind Closed Doors. Simply put, I chose to explore some ratchet, self-absorbed behaviors. This is new to me, but the characters in this story have plenty of secrets and shenanigans going on. They want their nonsense kept quiet but of course all of their lies come to light one way or another. I guess I would want to describe it as, juicy. I had fun writing it and hope readers have just as much fun reading it.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
I want to say the answer is both. The desire to write a good story, or to improve my skills as a story teller always elicits tons of energy in me. I find myself excited by the prospects of whatever twists and turns my pen will decide to take. It's such an exhilarating feeling. I will say that I can feel exhausted y it whenever I hit a wall. It's so emotionally draining for me. I absolutely feel depleted. It's as if, writer's block is uncurbable and I'll never finish the story. Although I know better, the emotion behind this fear is very real and wears me out!

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Well, to date, I've written ten thirteen books. There are two series, and those that stand alone. I find that I have varying interests and because of this, I write whatever I'm feeling passionately about in the moment. For example, I love murder mysteries, therefore I chose to give a try. I enjoyed it a great deal and am now working on my third in that genre. I've also written a couple of children's books (only for the children in my family because they asked), And, I've written a biography. Lastly, the two series are family sagas. I would never want to stay stuck or confined to one form of expression in this art form. I want to explore and push myself.

Has publishing your first book changed your process of writing? Please explain.
I have to say, not really. 2010 was a long time ago for my memory. I was signed with a publisher at that time, and what I remember most is how helpful having deadlines were for me. Because of this, I still put myself on specific timelines which keep me focused and on track.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
What an interesting question. As a kid, I was incredibly shy...painfully so. School was difficult because I did not want to speak. I could not participate for fear that I would say something wrong and be ridiculed for it. Once in high school, we had an assignment to write about an emotional, personal experience. well, I dove in to that assignment without hesitation. Without getting into all of the details, I'll share when I got the paper back from the teacher, his remarks on those pages changed everything for me. It changed how I viewed self expression. I learned that I could express myself openly and clearly, and that there was no reason my voice wouldn't be heard. If my written words are powerful, then so am I.

What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
That would be, Where the hell you been? I believe that because the characters and their story is just little non-traditional in regards to family dynamics, some folks may not have understood what I was trying to convey. I laughed so much while writing it, I would hope that readers take a good look at that one.
>       *

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
This is easy...none. I can only give my full attention to one story at a time. I can't move on to anything else until whatever's current, is complete.

Do you read your book reviews?

How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do not read reviews. Early on, I would read them and found myself trying to write in a voice that was not my own. The only thing I know for sure is that, we cannot please every person. Everyone will not like everything. Armed with that knowledge, I understand that all I have to do is work hard and always strive to be better. There's always going to be someone who doesn't like something you've done.

What would you like to say to your readers?
I love people who read! I really appreciate someone taking time out of their day to pick up and read a book that I've written....it's truly a blessing to have such support. It's a joy whenever I have the opportunity to communicate and or interact with the readers. Thank you all for being so awesome.

Meet Author Syntell Smith

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Syntell Smith. I'm an independent author who has been publishing my own novels since 2019. I live in Detroit, but I was born and raised in New York.

Tell us about your latest book.
My latest book is the third of my Call Numbers series. A workplace drama that tells the story of a group of library employees working together at a branch in New York City during the 90's.

What characters in your book are most similar to you or to the people you know?
Well, the series is loosely based on myself at the time I was working for the New York Public Library and yes I based the characters in my books on the co-workers I worked with at the time as well. Naturally, the identities were changed to protect their privacy and also not get sued! (LOL)

How important was professional editing to your book's development?
It's very important. The editor and proofreader I use have been very helpful in bringing out the best of my novels. I look forward to giving each one repeated work in the future.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?
It's hard, I realize my books aren't for everyone, there is a niche audience that will enjoy my books so far. Only those who can relate to library workers and the industry. Not everyone is going to get that so their opinions, I'll acknowledge, but basically, they weren't the intended audience for the book. I'll respect what they have to say, but won't hold any ill will against them.

Does anyone in your family read your books?
*sigh*, no. No they won't. There are more strangers out there who take a chance reading my book than family members who can receive a free copy from me (and have!) but just won't read it. I don't let it discourage me, I just tell myself "They'll just have to wait for the TV series!"

Do you see writing as a kind of spiritual or therapeutic practice?
Not really spiritual or therapeutic, but I find writing cathartic. It helps with the stories I have locked inside me and sharing them with my readers in hopes that they'll like them and tell someone else about them is what keeps me going.

At what stage of your life have you done most of your writing?
I've been writing most of my life, actually. I wrote a blog in my late 20's, I did reviews for music, movies and television. It was always something in me, but only recently have I tried to publish it.

If you had the power to cure a disease of your choosing, what would it be?
Diabetes. It's a serious disease that plagues the black community and it's preventable if you're well informed. Unfortunately, I had a huge sugar dependency when I was young and learned about its dangers very late in life. I really wish I did a few things differently when I was younger.

What would you like to say to your readers?
If you're looking for a diverse read, something very different, with characters you can actually relate to, give my books a try. They may surprise you.

Author Profile: Sandra Nicole

Meet Author Sandra Nicole

Tell us about yourself.

I am Sandra Nicole. I hail from the town of Bedrock, aka, Flint, Michigan. I am a single mom of four who found writing as a way to escape reality, while channeling my own experiences with toxic relationships through books.

Tell us about your latest book.

My latest book is A Mann for Valentine's Day, which is the sequel to a Mann for Christmas. The story follows Miracle Johnson and Joseph Mann on a journey where they come from two different lifestyles: Joseph is a millionaire who runs a design firm, Miracle is a struggling marketing genius who just hasn't discovered her true worth. Joseph's sister isn't too welcoming of Miracle because she sees her as just another woman who is after her brother's money. What results is a tale of a love that seems almost like a fairytale, only with drama built in.

To you what difference do you see between a writer and an author?

A writer is someone who writes anything--magazine articles, reports, etc. An author is someone who writes books and novels that are published.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

I develop my characters first because they help me write the story and kind of steer the direction of the plot and influence the level of drama that will be infused throughout the pages of the book.

What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?

I felt like I made Miracle a character that was needy, but she wasn't. She was just misunderstood. I have also gone through to add more context to Joseph's background.

How do you celebrate when you finish your book?

When I finish a book, I breathe a sigh of relief, and then think about when I want to do another book. Sometimes I may treat myself to dinner or something. Finishing a book is definitely no easy feat.

What do you think of NaNoWriMo? Worth it?

To be honest, I try to participate in NaNoWriMo but I always end up doing my own thing. It's worth it if you need that push and accountability to write a book in a month, but for me, once I start a book, I'm not stopping until it is done, and that's usually in a few days.

What are the essential characteristics of a hero you can root for?

They are willing to stand up for what they want. They protect what they love. Even if they get knocked down, they are not afraid to stand back up. When it looks like all of the odds are stacked against them, they persevere.

What books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading urban fiction books, romantic suspense books and even some thrillers. I read nonfiction books that help me improve on my craft as a writer and author.

What would you like to say to your readers?

I would like to thank every reader who has taken a chance on my work. I appreciate you so much and you keep me motivated to continue writing.
