SCBookGal & Friends Chats with Shaun Brooks

Shaun is a fraternal twin born on July 4, making him a proud Cancer. He enjoys traveling, meeting genuine people, and investing his time and energy into meaningful connections. A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Shaun has no children and embraces life with an open mind and a compassionate heart.

His life has taken him across the United States and around the world. He has lived in Oahu, Hawaii, South Lake Tahoe, California, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Palm Bay, Florida. Shaun also spent three years working as a Merchant Mariner (Ordinary Seaman) in the Deck Department, traveling to countries including Bahrain, Dubai, Singapore, and South Korea before returning home to New York City.
In 2021, Shaun experienced the heartbreaking loss of his fraternal twin brother, who passed away from sepsis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their shared birthday on July 4 has never been the same. Each year, Shaun honors his brother's memory with a heartfelt balloon release, ensuring his legacy and love are never forgotten.

Wanting to reconnect with his African roots and make a meaningful difference, Shaun initially began supporting one young basketball player with small financial contributions. That single act of kindness grew into helping five players, then ten, and eventually many more. As he worked to connect talented athletes with basketball coaches in the United States, he repeatedly encountered broken promises and disappointment. Rather than giving up, Shaun chose to create his own path.

He founded Shaun Power Players, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to helping young basketball players from underserved communities across Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Kenya, South Sudan, and Tanzania. The organization currently supports boys and young men between the ages of 10 and 20 (grades 6–12), many of whom stand between 6'5" and 7'3" and dream of using basketball to change their lives.

These athletes face daily challenges that many people never experience, including food insecurity, limited transportation to practices and games, lack of proper basketball shoes and equipment, and little to no access to medical care when they become ill or injured. Despite these hardships, they continue to pursue their dreams with determination and resilience.

As the Founder and Owner of Shaun Power Players, Shaun remains committed to one mission: to keep striving, no matter the obstacles. Royalties earned from every book sold help support the nonprofit's mission, and supporters can also choose to follow and encourage individual players whose profiles are featured on the organization's website and in Shaun's book. Shaun believes every book sold, every review written, and every act of support brings these young athletes one step closer to achieving their goals.

Featured Book:

Twenty true stories. One shared dream. A powerful journey from the basketball court to the world.

Life Experiences of Shaun Power Players brings together the remarkable true stories of basketball players, coaches, mentors, and survivors who refused to let hardship determine their future.

At the center of the book is Shaun Brooks—a Bronx-born mentor and nonprofit leader whose life experiences took him from New York to Hawaii, across the oceans, and eventually into the lives of young athletes throughout Africa. After witnessing extreme poverty and limited opportunities, Shaun dedicated himself to advocating for players and coaches in South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Inside these pages, readers will meet young people who have survived war, displacement, hunger, family loss, refugee camps, and dangerous journeys across borders. Some trained without proper shoes or equipment. Others worked exhausting jobs to continue their education, crossed deserts in search of safety, or built basketball academies in communities with few resources.

Yet these are not simply stories of suffering.

They are stories of faith, courage, discipline, sacrifice, education, mentorship, and the relentless pursuit of a dream. Through basketball, these individuals found community, purpose, and the strength to keep moving forward when nearly everything around them told them to stop.

This book is not merely a charity appeal or an examination of refugee conditions. It is an honest testimony to the strength of the human spirit—and a call for coaches, scouts, sponsors, organizations, and compassionate readers to recognize the extraordinary potential that can exist behind difficult circumstances.

A moving and unforgettable collection for readers interested in inspirational true stories, basketball, African experiences, refugee journeys, humanitarian advocacy, faith, resilience, and youth empowerment.

July Inkspiration Day 31- Naaj

Naaj

Na’Kita aka Naaj is an emerging urban fiction author with a passion for telling raw, emotionally charged stories rooted in love, loyalty, betrayal, and survival. Her writing blends authentic street narratives with unforgettable romance, creating characters whose choices linger long after the final page. Through every novel, she aims to capture the complexities of family, grief, ambition, and redemption while giving readers stories they can both escape into and relate to On Everything I Love was her debut novel but is currently being reworked into A Savage Worth Saving and the first installment in an unforgettable series. It'll be released in August.

Get To Know Author Naaj:

What inspired you to write this book, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?
I wrote it to prove I could do it. I had so many finished projects that I never thought I’d see through, and this is my first book rewritten. The more I grew into my writing, the changes were necessary. I would want everyone to read it and remember Healing is Linear. It doesn’t look and feel the same for anyone. They all have their own processes.

Can you tell us about your main character (or favorite character) and what makes them special to you?
Maliyah is my FMC, and she is the most unhealed version of myself, and that’s why I loved writing her. She made me realize things about myself to build who she is.

If readers could remember just one thing after finishing your book, what would you want it to be?
The end is never the end; it’s just an entrance to a new beginning

What's next for you? Are you currently working on another book or exciting project that readers can look forward to?
I’m finishing out this series with a few more surprises and collabs on the way. This is my grind year; I want to get my name out.

July Inkspiration Day 30- Tia Strickland

Tia Strickland

Tia Strickland is a woman after God’s own heart—bold, transparent, and unafraid to share how His grace carried her through some of life’s darkest seasons. A devoted mother, advocate, and speaker, she has weathered storms that could have silenced her, yet chose to rise and let her testimony become a beacon of hope.

Her journey from brokenness to wholeness reflects her belief that true healing begins with surrender. Through her ministry and writing, Tia encourages women to see beyond their wounds and embrace their God‑given worth, reminding them that there is beauty in every battle and purpose in every delay.

Known for her radiant smile, down‑to‑earth spirit, and unshakable faith, she connects deeply with readers rebuilding their confidence after loss, betrayal, or disappointment. Her voice is warm, relatable, and rooted in truth—inviting others to breathe again, hope again, and believe again.

Tia’s contributions to anthologies and solo projects offer heartfelt reflections on endurance, forgiveness, and faith in motion. Her work reminds us that storms may come, but they can never drown the purpose God has placed within us.

Get To Know Author Tia Strickland:

What inspired you to write this book, and what message do you hope readers take away from it?
I wrote this book because I’ve seen what it looks like when people carry pain they never asked for, and I wanted to show how grace can rewrite even the darkest story. What I hope readers take away is that no past is beyond redemption. I want people to feel seen in their struggles, understood in their silence, and reminded that even the wounds they’ve learned to hide are not invisible to God. If anything, I hope this story shows that healing isn’t reserved for the perfect — it’s for the broken, the tired, the overlooked, and the ones who’ve convinced themselves they’re too far gone.

Can you tell us about your main character (or favorite character) and what makes them special to you?
Ayanna Carter is special to me because she represents the kind of strength that comes from surviving what should have broken you. She’s guarded, stubborn, and deeply wounded, but she keeps moving forward even when she doesn’t know how. What I love most about her is that beneath all her toughness, she’s really just a woman longing for truth, healing, and a chance to finally breathe. Her journey reminds me that grace meets us in our hardest places and that even the most closed‑off hearts can open again.

What was the most rewarding—and the most challenging—part of writing this book?
The most rewarding part of writing this book was watching Ayanna’s journey come to life on the page. Seeing her move from survival to surrender, from silence to truth, reminded me why stories of grace matter. It felt powerful to create a character who fights
battles many people never talk about and still finds her way toward healing.

The most challenging part was writing the painful moments honestly. I had to sit with her trauma, her anger, and her confusion, and make sure those experiences felt real without
overwhelming the reader. Balancing the darkness of her past with the hope of her future pushed me as a writer, but it also made the story stronger.

If readers could remember just one thing after finishing your book, what would you want it to be?
If readers remember just one thing after finishing my book, I want it to be that grace is still possible for them. No matter how heavy their past feels or how long they’ve carried pain in silence, God can still meet them in the middle of it and bring them into something new. If Ayanna’s journey shows anything, it’s that redemption is real, healing is possible, and their story isn’t over.

What's next for you? Are you currently working on another book or exciting project that readers can look forward to?
What’s next for me is honestly a season of stillness. I’m not working on any writing at the moment — I’m fasting, praying, and listening for God to show me my next move. This story took a lot out of me in the best way, and now I’m giving Him the space to speak before I step into whatever comes next. When He reveals it, I’ll be ready.

Book Spotlight:

She survived the streets. But can she survive the truth?

Ayanna Carter learned long ago that survival was more important than dreams.

Raised in a city where violence echoed through alleyways, loyalty came with a price, and hope felt like a luxury, she built walls around her heart and learned to trust no one but herself.

When a devastating tragedy forces her to confront the secrets buried within her family’s past, Ayanna finds herself pulled into a battle she never saw coming. As mysterious revelations begin to surface and questions about her mother’s death refuse to stay buried, she discovers that the greatest danger may not be the streets she grew up in—but the darkness that has followed her for years.

Caught between the life that shaped her and the faith calling her toward something greater, Ayanna must decide whether she will remain trapped by her past or embrace the grace that could change her future forever.

In a city divided between ashes and redemption, one woman will discover that healing begins where surrender starts.
